Present your information clearly and concisely.

Explain how you came to your design choices.

4-16-08

DemonstrationofInvention

Prepare to show your classmates and other visitors how your invention works, and what features you added to it.

This will include:

Run your device so that everybody can see how it works.

You will explain what you did to come to these design choices.

Explain how you came to the design of the hull.

Explain how you came to the design of the boiler.

There will be video recording of the running and explaining.

If you are ready to show today, lets do it.

Kitchen Doors

Your design for repairing the kitchen doors has been taken up by maintenance.

Check with Mrs. Sterling to see what needs to be done next.

They may need some signage.

Check with Mrs. Leydon on a sign idea as well.

Put Put Patent

See your notebook for a description of the patent.

Write up the design criteria.

Write up the assembly of your design.

Explain the evidence behind your design.

Include the response to this question in your writeup:

How does the boiler on the put put boat work? Use text and drawings to illustrate how the boiler causes the boat to move forward. Include information about the size of the pipes and their effect on the system, and discuss the heat engine cycle.

The above information must be typewritten. Using a wiki or word editor is an excellent idea.

You can host photos in lots of ways. flickr.com(yahoo), picasa.com (google), bitbucket, shutterfly are some of the free hosting options for photos.

You can host video for free in several places: vimeo.com has a weekly limit on uploads and provides a link to your video. Others include: google video, youtube.com (blocked by the school filter)

We can do a public demonstration of the project, at one of the schools nearby or here at DHS.

Botball Announcement

LOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN UMASS LOWELL's BOTBALL ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT on SATURDAY. Will look great on your brag sheet. FIinal build is Friday afternoon. We'll be leaving the competition at 6:30 Saturday morning and will get back at 6:30 Saturday night. If you would like to join the team, please see Mrs. Lewis or Mr. Connors for a permission slip.

Robotics event

Here is the plan:

I will be available tomorrow for a marathon build and planning session in room 234. Liz says that I am free all afternoon and evening. We should be able to get it programmed and built pretty well.

Saturday is an all day thing. We would leave very early in the morning and come back in late afternoon, early evening. The location is in Lowell.

At this point I see a few levels of success:

1. Going with a group of kids so they can see what it looks like to be involved in an event like this.

2. Not coming in last. In these events, you have a lot of opportunities to make changes on site. It is definitely possible to beat the team that doesn't show up (see #1)

If you could get the word out, that would be great. Friday afternoon in room 234, Saturday early. Permission slips will be a must.

Patent process

Working in groups of two or solo, you will create a design, plans and other documentation for a patent for a device.

You will need to create plans for making the boat and boiler.

Make instructions for making the boat and boiler.

Make instructions for using the boat and boiler.

documentation of your process for making the boat will help.

video of the boat running will help support your patent application.

Chapter 21 and 22 due today

Chapter 23 Due on Tuesday

3-17-08

Patent process

Working in groups of two or solo, you will create a design, plans and other documentation for a patent for a device.

The device will be either a steam powered put put boat or a projectile launcher.

Safety considerations must be built into your documentation and actions in class.

Any launch testing must be done in a controlled manner away from other people.

Chapters: 21, 22, Due Thursday Chapter 23 Due Monday of next week.

3-14-08

ProjectileLauncher

Ready to launch

What is next with these concepts?

Further development of the launcher, or further development of the putput boat?

2-3 weeks left in the term.

3-13-08

ProjectileLauncher

Ready to launch at the start of next period.

Pneumatics and hydraulics should be a significant focus of your design.

Come after school if you need more time.

Did you get your chapter questions in?

Drawings for the design?

Instructions for use?

Instruction for construction?

3-11-08

ProjectileLauncher

Use pneumatics and hydraulics to launch a projectile.

Do not reinvent the syringe.

What are the principles of pneumatics and hydraulics that will be useful in designing a projectile launcher?

We will to an in class test on Friday.

Each group will need to have drawings of their design

Each group will need to have instructions for use.

Each group will need to have instructions for construction.

3-4-08

Directionality of flow

What is the shape of the flow of fluids in the pipes?

Use the vacuum on the shopbot to show the direction

How can this show you the way the boiler works?

Chapter 19 Due Thursday

Chapter 20 due Monday.

Build the boats, work on fluids/design process related projects

2-29-08

How do hydraulic systems work?

How do pneumatic systems work?

How is the boiler a hydraulic/pneumatic system?

Does the size of the boiler affect performance?

Does the diameter of the straws affect performance?

Vent System - Open system, needs to be connected to tools making dust.

2-26-08

Reprinted texts are available.

The first two chapters (17 and 18) are due by the last class of the week.

Use the information in the chapters to give you ideas on how to redesign your boat and boiler.

Differences between hydraulic and pneumatic systems:

power and speed

Differences between closed systems and open systems

tires, pump, brake system, refrigerator, air conditioner, car's cooling system, car's heating system, dust vent system,

color coding for heat: blue is cold, yellow is normal, red is hot

color coding for pressure, blue is low, yellow is normal, red is high

Dust Control

We cannot run the shopbot through wood until a dust collection system is connected to it.

Bench hooks

Mrs. Leydon needs some bench hooks for her printmaking project.

Could be wood, could be metal.

2-25-08

Did you get your two boats done and checked off before vacation?

Cleanup is an issue. Tools need to be put away. Debris from your work needs to be cleaned up. There is paper that can be used on the tables if you are doing messy stuff.

First two chapters of the reading is due on the second day back after vacation (tomorrow)

2-13-08

Your first boat should be checked today. You should make a press formed hull and new boiler for a second boat by the end of the week.

2-12-08

First boat:

You should have your first boat complete and functioning by this period

The first boat should have a brake formed hull - cardboard is bent into shape

You should have a second boat complete and functioning by the end of the week

The second boat should have a press formed hull - metal is pressed into shape

You should experiment with the size and shape of the boiler.

2-7-08

Get your boiler happy

Test in boat

Check your notebook for more information and next steps

2-6-08

In the process of this project, you will need to make several boilers. You will need to get good at this process.

To start, you will need to make a standard boiler that works.

Debugging the boiler

What works about the boiler?

What do you need to do to make another boiler if yours did not work?

You will need your hull, and can make it more watertight.
